IntegrITS Performs Warfare Systems Testing for USS Reagan

The IntegrITS Warfare Systems Directorate supports the Warfare Systems Integration and Interoperability Testing (WSI2T) effort at the Integrated Combat System Testing Detachment (ICSTD) at Point Loma in San Diego.

What does that mean? We test the functionality of Combat Systems on naval ships to ensure that they are capable of meeting their stated requirements. Our Warfare Systems Group has been at the forefront of testing the Ship's Self Defense System (SSDS), which is onboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), the U.S. Navy's newest Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier, and other large deck naval vessels. This is a key step in the Navy's Warfare System Certification Policy (NWSCP), attesting that the combat system is ready for the ship's crew to fulfill their assigned mission.

On the surface this seems simple enough, but it's not. Command and control systems are made up of a myriad of complex components and interfaces, which normally have key differences from ship to ship. The Warfare Systems team has spent considerable time outside of their normal working environment, including weekends learning these continually evolving technical systems. We stepped in to fulfill an unexpected void as the lead engineer for the Battle Force Tactical Training (BFTT) System. As the team members improve their operational and technical acumen across a wide range of systems, they have contributed significantly to improving capabilities in cross-training, providing time and cost savings to IntegrITS, ICSTD and the U.S. Navy.
